Today I wanted to share with you one of the huge mistake I’ve made when I started marketing on the internet.

It is a huge lesson on traffic .. free vs paid

You ready?…

Here goes …

4.5 years ago I started off as an amazon affiliate and they pay 4% commission for every sale.

Being none savvy with business and economics … I didn’t realized that when promoting a color pencil that cost $7.89 I’ll get a 4% commission of 32 cents!!! hahaha

I had 60 over niche website where each site is featuring one product type from amazon.

At that time it was one of those program teaching us how to create automatic blogs that pulls in amazon products and post automatically on a daily basis. Since then Google had become wiser and such tactic doesn’t work anymore.

Each of these website regardless of how much the product cost …takes me the same amount of time to build.

I had to do the following for each

– product research and see what’s popular that people are already buying.
– Keyword research
– buy the domain name according to the keywords
– install WordPress
– install plugins
– Enter all the title, sub headings and content
– optimized site with keywords for (search engine optimization)
– link up to amazon
– create account for various social media account e.g. twitter
– Create account for various social bookmarking account
– link them all up to a central syndication service, onlywire.com
– Create Articles and submit to articles directories.
– link up to Google webmasters
– create site maps
– setup robot.txt to avoid any duplication indexing my google
– go to pingler.com to ping my website to make sure crawler starts indexing my site as soon as possible.

That’s a lot to do isn’t’ it? and I did it for 60 over websites.

I am dependent on Google to send me free traffic.

Fast forward after 2 years I was at the verge of giving up because nothing seems to be working until one faithful morning when I was about to send my daughter to school.

I walked over to my letter box to see if there is any mail for me.

There I saw an envelope marked by amazon. I was curious what was it?

I opened it up and there I see a cheque in there.

Had a closer look at the amount …. it was for $501.59

It took awhile to sink in that this was my first affiliate cheque and I was literally jumping for joy.

As mentioned I was at the verge of giving up and this cheque came along!

Imagine you receiving $501.59 in the mail … FOR 2 YEARS EFFORT!!!!

That is highly profitable isn’t it??!! haha

However there it was a major milestone for me because it shows me that it is possible to make money online. BUT how can I do it correctly and faster?

Fast forward to 2 more years … I start to learn about paid advertising.

You see I come into internet marketing not willing to spend anymore than just to pay for my domain names and hosting .. okay maybe a program or two on how to make money online … and that’s it …

Do you know what I mean?

Anyway I ended up spending a lot of my savings on different programs .. sigh .. but getting back to the point … I have been depending on the “FREE” method to get traffic…

The epiphany here is THERE IS NOT SUCH THING AS FREE

We either pay by time or by money to get the results we want.

I realised that internet business is no different to tradition business…. the only advantage we have is leveraging the internet to draw in targeted audience who are looking for what we have.

I use to think driving traffic to website is tough … but until I realised that it is tough because I am using free method .. and depending on Google to rank me on the first page where most people will click through.

However paid method is a lot more measurable, scalable and predictable.

For example if I want 100 people to look at my offer …. I will paid a solo ad provider and he/she will send 100 clicks my way

From there I can see how many of the 100 clicks had chose to enter their email at my website… and become my subscribers …

And how many of these subscribers are interested in what I have to offer and buy from me,

if the percentage at each step is high … I can opt to go to the same solo ad provider to give me some more clicks. and scale up my business that way.

YOU will have full control having to pay for your traffic instead of depending on the search engine to send the traffic.

My success online so far is two methods .. one is speaking to my warm market and paid advertising .. and paid advertising had contribute at least 1/3 of the 50 grand that I’ve made over the first 8 months.

that’s about 16K under 8 months with paid advertising vs $501.59 over two years when I was an amazon affiliate using free methods.

From there I start to appreciate paid advertising more and more as I understand and treat my online venture as a real business that is no different to any business we see around us.
